Paula’s  Pillow

Paula’s pillow is an order from the Museum Casa das Histórias - Paula Rego in Portugal.

The show premiered on the occasion of the museum’s fourth anniversary. It’s a stationary show that can be presented either in a Theatre room or outdoors.

Synopsis

With hypnotizing sound of a music box, two characters with frozen and inexpressive faces in an extravagant universe let their masks fall. Freed from the rigid mechanisms ruled by society, they fight like dogs to exhaustion.

The pillow man, with a monstrous face and a bleeding heart meets them just for a waltz.

On the other side of the mirror, fairy tales have another face.

About

Grotesque wander into the complex and disturbing universe of Paula Rego.

Seduction, power, shame, pride, love, hate, tenderness, sensuality, fear, anger and humour, a range of emotions that invites to an initiatory journey on a surprising universe where the bodies tell their own story.

A story within stories.

The story of Paula’s pillow; it talks about women, both feminine as wild.
Wildness that reflects their true place in this world rather than the feminine ideal conveyed by society.

Links between fine arts and dance motion explain this creation. It is to choreograph based on the creative processes of the composition of fine arts.

30 paintings from Paula Rego have inspired the creation of the show. We use different approaches such as masks and puppets.
